The shitstorm hit in the middle of deep cover for Clint Barton. Deep cover that had lasted exactly ninety minutes after all the world had access to the complete files of Hydra and therefore SHIELD.

For Clint, half a world away working a four month long operation, it meant that every contact he'd made to worm his way closer to a CEO running an international bio-weaponization organization made him for who he was.

And when he meant 'made' he meant 'shot on sight' made.

Op blown he'd tried to get extraction, tried to get home, still in the dark about what was going on back home in DC. But his three man team turned out to be one corpse and two Hydra henchmen.

Of course, he was shot again.

Really, overseas surgery was a nasty business. He was pretty sure they'd used actual sewing thread for his stitches and infection was less a chance and more imminent. It took every trick and trade he had to just get on a junker of a cropduster back to the Western Hemisphere. And when he ran out of favors and charm it was on to highjacking vehicles and slinking passed the boarder patrol just to get back into the good old US of A.

But his luck ended in Kansas City. So close to home but still so far away. He was out of assets, cash and options. He knew they would track and trace any call made to Natasha or Maria Hill or any of his normal contacts. He had one chance, one call then he was done. He weighed his options and went for the safest bet. From a pay phone in Union Station, the last old glory railstation in the Midwest and the sight of more than one Prohibition shoot out, Clint dialed Steve's number and waited...

I'll do my best to do this without to many spoilers!

With the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier A LOT has instantly changed for Marvel movie verse and all characters in it. With Clint here being directly connected to SHIELD I am going to shift his character to match the changes in the canon. Any threads currently running are going to stay on track but alter marginally where they need to. All new threads will run direct from new SHIELD canon WHICH IS HORRIFYING AND EPIC BY THE WAY.

Cap 2... go see it. Seriously.

It's nearly a week before either Clint or Steve regain some sanity and sobriety. The archer is up and about, cleaning away what remains of the water and snacks. He hits the shower for a hot soak before finally heading for the kitchen.

He's positive that Steve will be ravenous. He starts in on mi\aking some pancake batter and frying bacon and eggs while the coffee brews in the machine.

He calls in to SHIELD to let them know the situation, then checks in with the team. Natasha's kind enough to take over handling the explanations to everyone else in the Tower and Clint promises her a dinner of her favorite pasta and garlic bread in return for the help.

He fills a mug of coffee and then pours the first puddles of batter onto the griddle to cook.

Doctor Stephen Strange is a handy fella. Between the whole time space and general dimensional weirdness and mutations out there its nice to be on the good side of someone that can actually choose and control where they'd like to go.

Strange is starting to become Clint's go-to guy for general weirdness he can't figure out on his own. It's costing him a fortune in fancy teas and Red Sox tickets but its worth it when it results in things working out. And Clint would rather prod him than Loki for these kind of power trips.

And Strange seems rather thrilled by the idea of a two hundred year jump in addition to a colossal fling through space to pop aboard the USS Enterprise with his general suck the ozone of the immediate area and minor implosion.

It was worse than Mjolnir...

Clint was pretty glad he didn't eat much and there for didn't puke too much all over the shiny metal floor of the Federation Flagship.

Clint hates Russia. He hates the people, he hates the food, he hates the cold... in general he HATES Russia.

Only two things have come out of Russia in his opinion are enough to make the whole country worth existence at all. One was Natasha Romanov. The other was stroganoff.

He would say Bucky Barnes but the ex-WWII soldier turned uber-sniper turned ally was only sustained and trained in Russia. He was born on Staten Island. So there.

So its any wonder that his attitude is snarling and sour when he heads for a bar to TRY and get something to warm his belly and hands in the bitter cold of Siberian winter. He's in a foul enough mood that he ignores almost everyone in the bar. Including those he probably shouldn't.*

Time changes things. Everything. Laws. Criminal activity.

The biggest one being young men become older ones and eyesight of the average joe human tends to start to fade. At least it was the biggest one in Clint's opinion.

Having lived through the 'second renaissance of modern technology' he didn't bat much of an eye at the robotics and cars and general advanced tech that was plugged into every corner of the station. It gave him a bit of nostalgia for Tony Stark's old Work Shop in its lesser years so he gave tired little smiles to everything and tried to ignore the instinct to chat to JARVIS behind the MXs' backs like a high schooler...

He needed to get out of the Tower more often. Damned kids are starting to rub off on him....

He waits patiently for someone to go and let "Kennex" know that he's got a visitor. A Level Eight Agent from SHIELD in possession of data chip of information to pass on about an 'old case'. The information did eventually need to be handed over to the police force but Clint would be lying if he said he wasn't looking forwards to having a glimpse at John Grimm again.

*Clinton Francis Barton shut his eyes and breathed fresh, cold air. The breeze rippled and feathered his short hair, drying the last of the water from his shower and fluffing it into soft clumps. His skin prickled all over, scrubbed with near scalding water and harsh soap left him pink and raw in some places but it felt good.

It'd been a shower long time coming, Hell it felt like he'd been needing that shower for years, not just the last week or so, since he'd been mentally pulled away from his own body and stuffed into a far corner of his mind while Loki used him like a clockwork toy. It felt good to wash it all way, just for a moment, the sweat and blood, caked up dust and grit and the fine layer of ash and cement dust. It felt like it had been weighing him down and now it was gone. At least for a little while.

He let the moment linger, letting his past and present roll together.

He thought of his mother and father, pulled lifeless from a car crash when he was barely six. He though of his little brother Barney, who'd he tried desperately to keep at his side as they were skipped from foster home to foster home until a sweet suburban couple decided they liked chubby cheeked and bright blue eyed Barney but not the sullen and quiet Clint and they were pulled apart. He smiled slightly at his first runaway attempt and all the others afterwards, short avdentures camped out under rusted train cars or curled up in the branches of trees or on roofs. He hummed over his years with the circus, 'Carson Carnival of Traveling Wonders', performing as an acrobat, daredevil aerialist and finally 'The World's Greatest Marksman'. He remembers the rainy day that Carson folded up tent for the last time, being tossed onto the back-roads of Oklahoma and stumbling on in a confused daze, unsure where to go or how to survive until he was given a lift from an Army detail heading for Tulsa. There had been no room for his quiver and recurve in the military but the Army Rangers had made a sniper out of him, a soldier instead of a back alley scrapper.

That was how he ended up on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s radar. A near perfect kill record, highly decorated, absolutely lethal in action... and repeat marks on his jacket for insubordination and reckless behavior. S.H.I.E.L.D. wanted him and the Rangers were quick to turn him over, glad they didn't have to discharge one of their best specialists for 'bad behavior'. With Fury dictating from a distance and Coulson taking his Handler duties above and beyond, acting as Clint's own personal Jiminy Cricket he'd finally started to round out around the rough edges, come into his own and he felt like he'd found his place. And they gave him his bow back. He could do what he was trained to do, act independently, make his own judgement calls and Fury trusted him enough to turn him loose with no more than the expectation of the occasional check in.

He sighed, it sent a small ache through his chest, thinking about that hard earned trust was now cracked and flaking. And even more so the guilt that churned constantly in his gut. They told him over and over that it wasn't his doing, he was acting under the control of another but he remembered every action and reaction keenly, it bit and gnawed at him. The destruction he'd wrought on the Helicarrier, the innocent lives he took, the way his actions had cut deep into other members of the team, the keen loss of his first and only Handler... it all ached and burned toxic in his stomach. He'd fought himself to exhaustion to make up for it but it still didn't feel like enough, even after New York.

He shook his head sharply, trying to throw it off. There wasn't anything he could do about that now. He was on medical and psychiatric leave, they were waiting to see what happened to him, in times of stress and relaxation. See if he 'relapsed'. It was all a waiting game and he was banned from the range and from going on mission work. At least for now. It couldn't last much longer, at least he hoped not.

Sighing he looked out on golden hued clouds and far below the limitless black sheet of the ocean below. The sweet scent of sea air, fresh and clean, soothed the darker thoughts away and he shut his eyes again, feeling the rush of air and around him as the Helicarrier hummed along through the base of the cloudline. Clint shifted forwards a bit, resecuring his perch on the base of one of the towers and swung his legs down, he stretched a bit, wriggling bare toes and feet in the dying sunlight as he kicked them idly over the edge of a seven story vertical drop to the deck of the Helicarrier. Fearless of the height and danger, or ignorant of it, he relaxed back against the conning tower base behind him, hands tucked into the pocket of his hooded sweatshirt and eyes half lidded, he was going to wait until the sun had finally gone all the way down and the last of the heat he could steal from it had faded before giving up his perch and heading back inside, back to facing the weight of reality and fate.*
